If You Like Dark on Netflix, You’ll Love these 5 Other Web Series

The third season of Dark released yesterday, and I won’ be surprised if you told me that Netflix’s website crashed all day because of the amount of users watching the scifi webseries. It’s the perfect mix of thriller and scifi, set in a gorgeous landscape of rural Germany, and a storyline that just gets crazier with each season. Now, I won’t give anything away, don’t worry. But I will tell you this: if you like Dark, you will LOVE these other web series, all of which are available to watch online –

The Missing

Currently available on Netflix, The Missing is a British anthology drama series circling around the lives of Tony and Emily Hughes, and their son Oliver. While traveling from England to France for a football match, Tony loses sight of his son. What follows next is a sequence of events, equally horrifying and heartbreaking. The thriller aspect keeps the audience on their toes throughout and the emotional plotline of the parents is a beautifully written, endearing one. Watch The Missing!

Babylon Berlin

It’s true that German TV is a class apart — they don’t need the rona-dhona of Indian TV or the extra-ness of American TV. They’re subtle and use writing to drive the plot forward. As they do in Dark, and similarly in Babylon Berlin. Defined as a neo-noir series, Babylon Berlin is based on the books with the same name written by Volker Kutscher. Situated in 1929 Berlin during the Weimar Republic, the series follows the lives of Gereon Rath, a police inspector secretly trying to dismantle an extortion ring, and Charlotte Ritter: police clerk by day, flapper by night. Apart from the gorgeous visuals, the detective narrative of the series is intriguing and keeps the audience entertained. Watch on Netflix!

Ozark

Critically acclaimed and referred to as Netflix’s ‘most underrated series,’ Ozark is a must watch for all you crime-thriller fans. It’s a show about many firsts: the first time we see Jason Bateman in a non-comedy role, the first time we see the American side of drug peddling, and the first time we see the ‘perfect American family’ torn apart by the drug market. This is a problem that plagues America deeply, and Ozark shows us how borders are porous and real-life ground realities are more complex than politicians would like to believe.

Stranger Things

You knew this was coming. Stranger Things has been the centre of most entertainment news, memes and conversations since 2017. Created by the famous Duffer Brothers, the sci-fi thriller show is set in the washed up fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, in the 1980s. After 10 year old Will goes missing, secrets of the twon unravel, like a laboratory that hides the ‘upside-down’ world — an alternate reality that exists simultaneously with the present. Stranger Things soon became the most popular series on Netflix and an immediate cult classic. There’s no way you haven’t watched it, but in case you’ve been living under a rock (or the upside down), stream it now on Netflix.

The OA

The OA is an American mystery drama web series with science fiction, fantasy and supernatural elements. So it’s similar to Dark in its use of sci-fi and mystery, with a little supernatural stuff peppered over. The premise is about when an adopted young woman, Priarie Johnson, resurfaces after having been missing for 7 years. With a fascinating plot and a talented cast consisting of Britt Marling, Emory Cohen and Scott Wilson in the leads, The OA is a fun watch.
