2020 has been an…interesting year. You know, if interesting means ‘profoundly awful’. It kinda makes me wish I had a time machine and could skip to the future, after this mess is over, or go back to simpler days of the past. What will life be like 10 years from now? And do you remember what life was like 10 years ago? Movies were all about youth, and the lines between commercial and independent were blurring. The music, too, was evolving. Filmy music was no longer following the same recipes; it became more contextualised to each scene and most importantly, remixes were not a thing. Music was rather eclectic: full of pop, folksy fusion, electro beats and power love ballads that were catered to the youth. It was a fun time. In case you want to escape the shitshow that is 2020, go back ten years through these 10 kickass songs:
1. Pee Loon
Sung by the ever soulful Mohit Chauhan, Pee Loon is from Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai. It’s sweet and stripped down to a raw layer, making it super chill to listen and vibe with.
2. Dil Toh Bachcha Hai
Only Rahat Fateh Ali Khan could sing such a masterpiece. Dil Toh Bachcha Hai is one of my favourite songs of all time, and I’m pretty sure it’s going to remain iconic for years to come. Kudos to Vishal Bharadwaj for making such an immortal film & song.
3. Ainvayi Ainvayi
No. I refuse to accept that this song is 10 years old. Ainvayi Ainvayi is my workout song, my drive song, my party song, my Thursday night chill song, my clubbing song…everything. Or maybe I’m old. Or maybe Salim-Sunidhi sung such a fantastic song for such a fantastic film that it’s always going to be everyone’s go-to track.
4. Oh Girl You’re Mine
Oh Girl You’re Mine is composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, sung by Loy Mendonca, Tarun Sagar and Alyssa Mendonca for the movie Housefull (who can forget). We love it for its chill vibe and easy-to-sing lyrics.
5. Sheila Ki Jawani
One word: I C O N I C. That’s all I have to say. Bye.
6. Gal Mitthi Mitthi
Another desi club song, Gal Mitthi Mitthi from Aisha is composed by Amit Trivedi and sung by Tochi Raina. This song will always be performed to at all sangeets, mehendis, reunions, farewells and dance parties. We love!
7. Uff Teri Adaa
Remember when this movie came out and how scared we all got? And remember how much we all wanted Deepika’s haircut? And remember how we got the same style done but looked nothing like her? Yeah, all that was so we could dance to Uff Teri Adaa and feel a little like a star. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have always given us great music.
8. Usure Pogudhey
For the Tamil movie Raavanan, only Mani Ratnam could have made a masterpiece like it and only AR Rahman could have lent such beautiful music. Usure Pogudhey will always be special for Rahman’s ability to create a power ballad with music instruments in tune with nature — the rain and waterfall. Listening to this song literally refreshes oneself.
9. Udi Teri Aankhon Se
Sung by Sunidhi Chauhan for SLB’s movie Guzaarish starring Aishwarya-Hrithik, Udi Teri Aankhon Se is simply beautiful. It takes the viewer to a whole other world. Hands down, one of the most gorgeous songs that Bollywood has produced.
10. Tujhe Bhula Diya
With Mohit Chauhan’s, Shekhar Rajviani’s and Shruti Pathak’s voice, lyrics by Kumaar and Vishal Dadlani, and music that is the perfect mix of electro-pop and folk, Tujhe Bhula Diya is a filmy song that actually gets it right. Without being over the top senti, it’s a love song straight from the heart.
