Zoya Akhtar is an artist who creates iconic characters who stays with us for the longest. She doesn’t over glamourize or sugar coat her characters, but portrays them in their rawest form, making them one of us. Some of her characters even have shades of grey, still, we end up loving them. She makes sure that her stories touch our hearts. She makes us dive into the world she has created with these iconic characters.
So, if you are someone who loves cinema and looks at a film through all the aspects and not just the final product, then you will know that Zoya Akhtar is a brilliant filmmaker.
Today as the filmmaker turns a year old, let us have a look at some of the iconic characters created by Zoya.
1. Farhan Akhtar’s Character In Dil Dhadakne Do
Zoya Akhtar sent a message out to the world through a man and told us what women want from a man. She created the character – Sunny, who believed in giving women equal opportunity. The scene where Farhan’s character Sunny bashes Rahul Bose’s character for his misogynist remark is worth a million applause. Zoya effortlessly told us how men should be. We need more men in our lives who aren’t afraid of strong, independent, and successful women.
2. Konkana Sen’s Character In Luck By Chance
Zoya Akhtar, being an insider in the Bollywood film industry told us a story about the industry and it struck the right chord with her fellow insiders and the audience too. She kept it real and the struggles of Sona felt like our own. Sona dreamt of becoming a successful movie star, she worked hard, however, she couldn’t fulfill her dream, but she did take full advantage of the opportunities she got and turned into a successful TV star. Her failed relationship, her willingness to make things right, and then the realization that letting go is what will heal her – these simple aspects just struck the chord with the audience.
3. Katrina Kaif’s Character In Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara
Though Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara told the story of 3 different men, Katrina Kaif’s character as Laila had an important part to play in the film. She turns into a savior for Arjun (Hrithik Roshan). She brings him back to life from his mundane bitter world. She taught him to take life as it comes. Even though Katrina’s character was falling in love with Hrithik, Zoya made sure that Laila doesn’t lose her own freedom and continues living her life the way she wanted – carefree. While most films show women sacrificing everything for a guy, Zoya broke the stereotype by telling us one doesn’t have to give up everything when in love.
4. Priyanka Chopra’s Character In Dil Dhadakne Do
Zoya Akhtar showed us what a woman goes through in her life through Priyanka Chopra’s character in DIl Dhadakne Do. Priyanka’s character struggled with a lot of things – unsupportive parents, a husband who wants to start a family, etc. But what is more beautiful is that she dealt with them in the most realistic way. She wasn’t shown as a superhuman, but it was portrayed that she is strong and independent and would do anything to fulfill her wishes.
Not all characters by Zoya Akhtar are perfect, some are even flawed, yet beautiful in their own way. Have a look at some of those characters.
5. Alia Bhatt’s Character in Gully Boy
While many hated Alia Bhatt’s character Safeena, we must say that she had the goodness too. She loved Murad so much that she turned into a possessive girlfriend. Zoya Akhtar created this character really thoughtfully – she showed us how Safeena went out of her way to support Murad in his career and she also showed us to what extreme level she can go to if someone got near her boyfriend. Zoya made us love Safeena with all her flaws. Many even said that she was toxic but Zoya didn’t take a step back in portraying a character that was raw as Safeena.
6. Sobhita Dhulipala’s Character In Made In Heaven
Sobhita’s character as Tara Khanna in Made in Heaven was flawed yet the most relatable one. She was an astute businesswoman, a wife who loved her husband, a great friend and above all empowered woman. Zoya Akhtar created art by creating this character. She showed Tara Khanna as a woman who stood against molestation and the dowry system. But at the same time, when we look into her past, she has done extreme things to climb the ladder of success.
7. Vijay Varma’s Character In Gully Boy
Another artistic creation by Zoya Akhtar. The way she had written the character of Vijay Varma as Moeen is commendable. She showed his struggle to survive and the extreme things he did to fight poverty. He made kids do illegal things too, but on the other hand, he had a soft corner for the kids and took care of them. He even went a step ahead and sacrificed a night in jail so that Murad (Ranveer Singh) fulfills his dream
Well, isn’t she really an artist?
