Generally, I don’t like watching trailers of films. They tend to give too much away. With the very same expectation in mind, I watched the trailer of Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar. But I was pleasantly surprised.
The trailer begins with your typical boy-meets-girl in some whacky way. In this case, Parineeti Chopra’s character, Pinky, asks Sandeep, played by Arjun Kapoor, to help her urgently escape Delhi. I am immediately intrigued. They escape on a train to some village, somewhere in North India, and the ‘modern city girl’ is dumbfounded at her helpless situation.
But there’s more to the story. She seems to be working for someone, playing games, and he too seems to be doing the same. The movie, in true Dibakar Banerjee fashion, exudes the kind of noir comedy that also happens to be entertaining. Too much isn’t given away in the trailer (for once) and we want to watch the movie to find out more.
At the end of the trailer, you see Pinky and Shraddha in locked arms—to kill each other. The twist is funny, considering that they meet, run away, probably have sex, and try to end each other’s lives. We want to know why. Parineeti’s Pinky is starkly different from her previous bubbly characters, and Arjun Kapoor’s silent, quiet Sandeep is a mellowing surprise. In the best way.
I’d say this trailer deserves a 4/5. I’m a bit worried that this is going to be far too similar to Banerjee’s previous films—but hey, why shouldn’t it be. He is fantastic, and his films are entertaining.
Starring Parineeti Chopra, Arjun Kapoor and Neena Gupta, Sandeep aur Pinky Faraar was set to release on March 20, but is delayed due to the corona-mishap. Oh well, the wait only builds up the excitement!
